Presentation: An Alaskan Arctic Wildlife Canoe Expedition

  • Changes in Latitude 2525 Arapahoe Avenue Boulder, CO, 80302 United States (map)

Tucked into a remote corner of northeast Alaska, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is a place where wilderness can be experienced on an epic scale, encompassing over 19 million acres. It is a place of discovery and adventure; a place for solitude; a place to be self-reliant and close to nature. There are no man made trails, parking lots or visitor centers. It is a place to view wildness in a unaltered environment and it is truly unique to anywhere on this continent. In 1956, a party of five conservationists went on an expedition in the Sheenjek Valley to explore and campaign to protect this pristine area of Alaska. In the summer of 2017, Stan Havlick and Mike Fallon visited Last Lake, the most northerly destination of the 1956 party. They then canoed over 100 miles of the Sheenjek River, which was inspired by their friend, 95 year old Bob Krear who was a member of the original expedition. We hope you are able to join Stan and Mike as they share some of their tales and photos of this historic adventure. You may also enjoy viewing the DVD, Arctic Dance and reading the insightful book “Two in the Far North” by Mardy Murie. Stan, who has lived and traveled on all seven continents, will also devote a portion of his program to answering your questions about the wonderful world of travel.
